""" The Gatekeeper """
What you are about to read is a TRUE story. It will be described in as exact detail as possible. This was witnessed by 5 adults and one 14 year old female teenager. You be the judge as to what happened...
We had relatives over the past weekend from the Seattle area. They had heard about a place just outside Spokane called "1,000 Steps". This place was supposed to be either haunted, possessed, devil worshipper place, you name it. I Googled it and actually came up with several hits. My relatives asked me if I had ever heard of this place, and I stated that I had. They then asked if I believed the stories about it, and I laughed and said I had spent 54 years laughing at nonsense like this. They then asked if I knew where it was, and I said I knew almost EXACTLY where it was. They then asked the question I knew that was coming, and would I be willing to take them there Sunday night. I said sure. It wouldn't bother me at all to go there. I would show them the steps and let them have their fun.
So we jumped into two cars around 11:00 PM and off we went for the 10 minute ride to the steps. I will go to my grave wondering what happened next......
We arrived at the area where I thought it should be and got out. I looked around and decided we were at the wrong place and motioned for the other car to follow me and I drove on down the road. We drove a short distance and I saw a lighted area where I decided to pull over and let the other car know what was happening. As I pulled up under the light, there was a closed gate leading to the back of the cemetary. On the other side of the locked gate stood a scruffy looking man wearing nothing but a tattered flannel shirt, hair down to his shoulders, looking like he just fell out of a 1890's cowboy and western movie. He stood motionless with his johnson flapping in the wind. He never moved a muscle. I've never had chills run down my spine like at that moment. I made a quick U-turn and went back a short distance and pulled over. We all decided we had had the shit scared out of us back there, but we, well the 3 other adult males in this party decided they would go back and talk to this person. I happily agreed to stay with the women and stand guard...LOL. My nephew, my son and his friend walked back to the turnout and went up to him. They offered him a cigarette and he took it and when they lighted it for him his hand was ice cold. They asked him what he was doing and he said he was the "Gatekeeper", and that he was cold. They decided they had seen enough of this and walked away.
None of us could believe what we saw. They came back to the cars and we decided we would go on down the road to see if we could find the "Steps". I drove down the road back past the "Gatekeeper" and he was gone. We decided the "Steps" were the other way and drove past him again and he was there. Finally getting my bearings, I realized the steps were back the other way, past the "Gatekeeper" and on down the road about a quarter mile. We drove back past you-know-who and you guessed it, he was gone. I pulled over where I thought the "Steps" were and after a short search with a cell phone flashlight, we found them.
Everyone decided to go except me. I didn't feel a 54 year old double-heart attack survivor should be climbing 100+ feet of stairs that was overgrown with brush and crumbling apart. I hated to miss out on the fun, but as it turned out, it was for the better. They started up and when the fourteen-year-old, my daughter Sarah, hit the first step, she asked to be brought down. She said she felt like a thousand eyes were watching her. They escorted her almost to the street and she came the rest of the way on her own. As soon as she hit the pavement, she screamed. Instantly, another scream as the other lone female in our group came down. She was crying uncontrollably. Now bear in mind, I had been standing there for several minutes, staying out of a fairly busy country road, keeping my eye on traffic so I wouldn't get ran over. The cars would see my truck and slow down, and speed up when they got past. I NEVER saw the "Gatekeeper" standing there. It wasn't until Sarah screamed that I realized his being there, and I swung around to defend my daughter and my nephew's girlfriend. I asked him how he was and he said he was cold. At that instant, someone from above screamed "Help". He continued walking about a foot onto the road, for about another quarter mile. I could tell this because they had a white line to show you where the roadside ended. He crossed the road and disappeared into the front gate of another cemetary.
Now, what made this even more, shall I say scary, was the fact that several cars, at least 5, drove within inches of the "Gatekeeper" and not one car ever hit their brakes. Not even one brakelight. It would have been IMPOSSIBLE for them to not see him. It was at this exact point I realized that maybe they couldn't see him, maybe only we could see him.......
The 3 brave males made their way to top, looked around, saw a small building with some Satanic writings on it, pissed on a grave, and made their way back down to the road. They said they had some very bad feelings, but they were OK. The girls asked who had screamed and they said no one. I grinned, thinking they were trying to scare the girls. I pointed out that the girls had the shit scared outta them already, did they scream? They assured me they had not. The thing is, I never heard a scream..............
We went home, told my wife what had happened, and took her back to see if we could show her the "Gatekeeper". We drove back and forth and even into the cemetary where I saw him go into, to no avail.
I'm not sure, and not one of the other 5 are sure as to what we saw. I will no longer laugh at people claiming to have seen a ghost, because we just may have.......
